Our Story
FIVE is a collective of contemporary silversmiths united by a shared ethos of precision and fine craftsmanship. Applying contemporary ideas to traditional materials and techniques, the collective challenges preconceptions around tradition, value and the use of silver. Formed in response to the shrinking number of dedicated platforms for contemporary silver and metalwork, FIVE operates as a collaborative model that champions ambition, experimentation and shared visibility. Through dialogue and collective presentation, the makers bring together distinct practices and aesthetics to celebrate metal in all its richness while pushing the boundaries of contemporary metalwork.
We will curate an exhibition of functional and conceptual metalwork through a range of tabletop pieces and wall mounted abstract objects. Silver is the core material of the group and the process and craftsmanship of silversmithing is inherent, but we as makers in metal are uninhibited by the ‘preciousness’ of material and the connotations that revolve around it and will create bodies of work that stretch our practices, challenge preconceptions and encourage a wider conversation.
Themes run through our work around our interaction with environment and we will work with light and surface to create a strong and dramatic setting, using reflection, shadow, and illusion throughout the display. Our aim is to showcase the work as it is intended to be viewed and allow visitors to imagine new possibilities for use and presentation.
